what the state requires isn’t the whole story

Florida auto insurance, explained by Chris

I help Florida drivers compare auto insurance from the companies available to me. We can review coverage limits, deductibles and the details of your current policy together. I’m based in Hudson, and you can work with me by phone, text or email.

Bodily injury liability

This pays for injuries you cause to other people. Florida doesn’t make most drivers carry it, so some quotes leave it off. Without it, an injury claim against you comes out of your own pocket.

Ask me: what limit makes sense for what I own?

When people usually call me

  • Your rate went up and you want someone to shop it.
  • You’re moving to Florida and need to get insured here.
  • You’re buying a vehicle or adding a driver.
  • You want to know what you’re required to carry versus what’s optional.
  • You’ve been told you need an SR-22 or FR-44 filing.

Whatever the reason, I start with a conversation, not a form letter.

Liability

Pays for injuries or damage you cause to other people. It protects your savings if you’re at fault.

PIP

Personal Injury Protection. It helps with your own medical costs after a crash, regardless of who was at fault. Florida drivers commonly see it on their policies.

Uninsured motorist

Helps protect you when the other driver has no insurance, or not enough of it.

Collision

Helps repair or replace your car after a crash, minus your deductible.

Comprehensive

Covers things other than a crash: theft, a fallen tree, hail, hitting an animal.

Deductible

The amount you pay out of pocket on a covered claim before the insurance company pays the rest.

Coverage always depends on the specific policy. I’ll go over yours with you.

What does it cost?

What car insurance has been costing in the area

Scattered palms rise above a low Gulf Coast horizon.

Price is the first thing most people ask about, so here are real numbers instead of a vague answer. These are the averages from auto insurance quotes in the area over the past 36 months. Auto insurance is usually sold six months at a time, so that’s how the prices are shown.

PolicyAverage quote (6 months)Typical range (6 months)Average per month
1 vehicle, liability only$1,610$690 to $1,840$270
1 vehicle, full coverage$2,520$1,210 to $3,180$420
2 vehicles, full coverage$2,940$1,660 to $3,550$490
3 to 4 vehicles, full coverage$4,450$2,280 to $5,400$740

“Typical range” is where the middle half of quotes landed. A few very high quotes pull the average up, so many drivers come in below it.

Closer to home: Pasco County

Hudson is in Pasco County, so here’s the same look for Pasco drivers with one vehicle.

Pasco County, 1 vehicleAverage quote (6 months)Typical range (6 months)
Liability only$1,420$700 to $1,680
Full coverage$2,380$1,370 to $2,680

Why it pays to have someone shop it

2.2x

When one driver got quotes from three or more companies, the highest quote was typically about 2.2 times the lowest.

$1,780

The typical gap between the highest and lowest quote for the same driver, over six months.

About 15%

The typical pay-in-full discount where a quote showed one. Paying up front isn’t for everyone, but it’s worth asking about.

Same driver, same car, same coverage, very different prices. That’s the reason I compare more than one company for you.

How to read these numbers

  • Most of these quotes carried Florida’s lower liability limits. Higher limits cost more, and they also protect you better.
  • Your price depends on your driving record, age, vehicle, address, coverage, and insurance history, so it can land above or below these numbers.
  • These are averages of past quotes, not a price list and not an offer. I can’t promise your quote will match them.

Discounts worth asking about

A row of modest Florida homes lines a quiet neighborhood.

Discounts differ from one insurance company to the next, which is one more reason to compare. When I quote, I check which of these apply to you.

  • Quoting ahead of time instead of the day you need coverage
  • Home and auto with the same agency
  • Owning your home
  • Paying in full
  • Continuous coverage with no gaps
  • Good student and student away at school
  • Military, first responder, or commercial driver license
  • Auto club or association membership
  • Electric vehicle
  • Signing documents electronically

Not a simple situation? Call me anyway

A quiet canal runs past small docks and seawalls.

A lot of people assume they can’t get insured because of their license or their record. Don’t count yourself out before you ask. Tell me what’s going on and I’ll look at your options with you.

No Florida driver license

Licensed in another state or another country, or not licensed yet? Tell me your situation and I’ll see what I can do.

Passport or consular ID only

If a passport or a consular ID is the identification you have, call me. I’ll walk through your options with you.

Suspended license

You may still need insurance to get your license back or to keep a car registered. I can help you shop for it.

SR-22 filing

An SR-22 is a form filed with the state to prove you carry the required coverage. If you’ve been told you need one, I can help.

FR-44 filing

An FR-44 is Florida’s filing after a DUI conviction, and it calls for higher liability limits. I help drivers shop for it.

Don’t own a car

Need a filing but don’t own a vehicle? Ask me about a non-owner policy.

I can’t guarantee coverage or approval. I can promise a straight answer about where you stand.

What to have ready for an SR-22 or FR-44

  • Your case number. It’s on the paperwork you received from the court or from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The insurance company uses it when it files the form with the state.
  • The reason for the filing and the date of the violation or suspension
  • Your driver license number, or the identification you do have
  • Your current license status: valid, suspended, or revoked
  • The vehicle you need insured, or tell me you need a non-owner policy
  • Any letter from the state that says what coverage you must carry and for how long

With an FR-44, Florida requires liability limits of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident for injuries, plus $50,000 for property damage. That’s why an FR-44 policy costs more than a minimum policy.

I handle the insurance side. Questions about your license, your case, or how long the filing lasts go to the state, the court, or your attorney. Requirements can change, so confirm yours with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

What to have ready for a quote

  • Names, dates of birth, and license information for each driver
  • Year, make, and model (or VIN) for each vehicle
  • The address where the vehicles are kept
  • Driving history: tickets, accidents, claims
  • Your current policy, if you have one

Don’t have everything? Call anyway. I’ll help you figure out what’s needed.

Common questions

What does “full coverage” really mean?

It isn’t an official term. People usually mean liability plus collision and comprehensive. What matters is which coverages and limits are actually on your policy, and I’ll walk through them with you.

How much coverage do I actually need?

It depends on what you own, what you drive, and how much risk you’re comfortable with. I’ll explain the trade-offs so you can decide.

Can I switch companies before my policy expires?

In most cases, yes. I can help time the new policy so there’s no gap in coverage.
