plans, in plain words

Health insurance through the Marketplace, explained.

Picking a health plan means comparing premiums, deductibles, networks and tax credits all at once. I’ll go through the options with you so you know what you’re signing up for. I don’t charge a fee to help you enroll.

How Marketplace coverage works

Florida uses HealthCare.gov

Florida doesn’t run its own exchange. Marketplace plans here are sold through the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov.

You can only enroll at certain times

Open Enrollment starts November 1 each year. Outside of it, you need a qualifying life event, like losing other coverage, moving, getting married or having a baby.

Your income affects your price

Depending on your household income, you may qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers what you pay each month.

Pre-existing conditions are covered

A Marketplace plan can’t turn you down or charge you more because of a health condition you already have.

What to compare

  • The monthly premium. What you pay whether you use the plan or not.
  • The deductible. What you pay before the plan starts paying for most care.
  • The out-of-pocket maximum. The most you’d pay in a year for covered care.
  • The network. Whether your doctors and hospitals are in it.
  • Your prescriptions. Whether they’re on the plan’s drug list, and at what cost.
  • The metal level. Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum. Lower levels cost less each month and more when you need care.

What I’ll need from you

  • Who needs coverage, and their ages.
  • Your ZIP code.
  • Your expected household income for the year.
  • Your doctors and prescriptions, if you want them checked.

Please don’t send Social Security numbers or medical details through the website form. I’ll collect what’s needed securely when it’s time to enroll.

Questions I get about health insurance

When can I sign up?

During Open Enrollment, which starts November 1 each year. Check HealthCare.gov for this year’s deadline. If you’ve had a qualifying life event, you may be able to enroll now.

What counts as a qualifying life event?

Losing other health coverage, moving, getting married, having or adopting a baby, and some changes in income are common ones. You generally have a limited window after the event to enroll.

How do I know if I qualify for a tax credit?

It depends on your household size and income. I can run your numbers through the Marketplace and show you what you’d pay.

Do you help people outside Florida?

No. I’m only licensed in Florida.
